Pleasant Valley Parkway Bridge

The $7M Pleasant Valley Parkway Bridge project consisted of replacing the bridge’s superstructure as a 2-span structure. The work for this bridge, which spans over the Woonasquatucket River, includes a concrete deck & sidewalk, Precast Prestressed NEXT (New England ExtremeTee) Beams, utility relocation, lighting, temporary working platform and utility support bridge, and temporary earth retaining walls. The project also consisted of the demolition of the entire existing bridge superstructure, pier cap and partial demolition, which was performed under a complete bridge closure.

The 4D schedule was used to effectively connect the project’s design and construction phase – including conforming with the environmentally mandated restriction of not working in the river from late winter through early summer. The schedule was then further enhanced to show costs and communication with the public. Graphically representing the sequence of construction events, the 4D schedule identifyied potential risks, ultimately reducing the potential for RFIs and change orders. As a result, RIDOT saved over $120k in road user costs, traffic control and overhead and was able to reopen this vital link for residents and commuters several months earlier than originally planned.
