I-195 Contract 7
The I-195 Contract 7 project was the high profile $90M portion of the $650M relocation of I-195 in Providence, RI. This contract included a seven span 1,250 foot long bridge with a 400 foot long network arch bridge constructed on drilled shafts. The new Signature Arch span over the Providence River was designed to be the centerpiece of the project. Due to the Contractor's initiative to fabricate the structure off-site and float the entire structure in on a barge, the fabrication and timely delivery of the arch segments were critical to the success of the project. Turino, which had the overall responsibility of monitoring the progress of the majority of the phases of the entire project, was assigned the additional task of tracking the fabrication of the arch span. The creation of the arch was tracked from the production of the raw materials at the steel mills to the fabrication and painting in the shop and through to the final delivery and erection at the off-site facility.
During the fabrication of the arch span, the structural steel erector determined that due to the complexity of the structure, they would need to modify their erection procedure. This in turn impacted the sequence in which the arch components would need to be delivered, which in turn impacted the fabrication sequence at the plant. Turino worked with the plant manager and modified the schedule in such a way that steel erection began on-time.
